Indiana Capital Chronicle reports the governor’s office announced on 2026-10-05 that sales of the optional “blackout” license plate have generated $12.9 million toward a five-year modernization plan for the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Agency Commissioner Kevin Garvey said the plate allowed revenue to be reinvested into the BMV and that “More than 380,000 sales later, that approach is paying off.” Gov. Mike Braun said the revenue is helping invest in employees and technology and that “Hoosiers clearly like the blackout plate, and its success is helping us build a better BMV.”
