Indiana University announced on 2026-10-08 at the IU Biotechnology Symposium in Indianapolis that six IU research teams were awarded funding through the IU Applied Research Center and IU Launch Accelerator’s National Security Biotech for Defense program for defense-focused biotechnology projects. Symposium guests included three commissioners of the National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology, among them U.S. Sen. Todd Young.
IU leaders said the awards build on a 2025 internal IU LAB National Security Biotechnology Challenge Grant, align with the National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology’s Pillar 3 ("Maximize the Benefits of Biotechnology for Defense"), and are intended to prepare IU researchers to pursue Department of Defense biotechnology investments while supporting Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane’s role in the Bioindustrial Manufacturing and Design Ecosystem.
