FAA orders Indianapolis heliport kept open, complicating city’s planned $10.9M purchase and stadium use
The Federal Aviation Administration decided to keep the 5.36-acre Indianapolis Downtown Heliport open for aviation uses, reversing a 2024 plan that would have allowed the Indianapolis Airport Authority to sell the land. The IAA had approved a $10.9 million sale to the city despite a mid-2026 $14 million bid from Chuck Surack to retain aviation operations, and the mayor’s office publicly objected to the FAA’s reversal, WISH-TV reports.

WISH-TV reports the Federal Aviation Administration decided to keep the 5.36-acre Indianapolis Downtown Heliport open for aviation uses, reversing a 2024 plan that would have allowed the Indianapolis Airport Authority (IAA) to decommission and sell the site. The IAA had moved to decommission the Washington Street facility, citing declining use and the cost of running the site versus its public value; it had approved a $10.9 million sale to the city.
WISH-TV says state officials, led by Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita, argued against closure, noting the site supports medical, police and military flights and emerging flight technology. In mid-2026, Chuck Surack offered $14 million to buy the property and keep it operating as an aviation hub. The mayor’s office said it disagrees with the FAA’s reversal; Mayor Joe Hogsett’s administration had previously hoped to use the land for a professional soccer stadium, though the MLS project has since moved to a site next to Lucas Oil Stadium.
