The Northwest Indiana Forum said a new academic study by Dr. Justin Ross and Dr. Saurav Roychoudhury identifies a six-layer ancillary impact ecosystem tied to hyperscale data center development across the region. The analysis finds construction could generate about $6.7 billion in regional output and $1.34 billion in earnings, operations about $330.1 million annually (sustaining ~1,815 jobs), and induced support-economy impacts of $1.26 billion during construction and $154.8 million annually in operations. The Forum said the study provides actionable guidance for county-level strategies and workforce investment.
The Northwest Indiana Forum urges stakeholders to engage in fact-based dialogue recognizing the region's industrial economic strengths and environmental stewardship. The Forum highlights that steel mills, refineries, energy producers and manufacturers provide thousands of family-sustaining jobs, and notes decades of industry investments in cleaner technologies, emissions controls, wastewater treatment, monitoring, habitat restoration, and brownfield redevelopment. Citing EPA and IDEM data, the Forum states regional air quality has improved and that monitored criteria pollutants meet NAAQS when wildfire-related ozone events are excluded.
The Northwest Indiana Forum announced a regional submission process for Indiana’s Redevelopment Tax Credit (RTC), noting the IEDC has resumed accepting applications. The Forum asked communities, developers, and partners across Lake, Porter, La Porte, Newton, Jasper, Pulaski, and Starke counties to submit eligible projects to the Forum by September 30, 2026, so the region can prioritize projects before the state deadline of October 31, 2026. The Forum said projects should include RTC and STOI application documents and can be submitted online via the Forum’s RTC application page.
