Indiana BMV’s planned mobile driver’s license could alter how banks, bars and others verify customer age and ID

Indiana’s BMV plans an optional mobile driver’s license that lets residents confirm age or identity through a smartphone app while keeping their physical license. The agency says the app will use biometric checks such as a face scan or fingerprint to match BMV records and will let users share only needed data — for example to buy alcohol or tobacco, show ID in banking or during traffic stops.

The BMV told a legislative study committee the mobile credential will work like tap-to-pay systems and will also be available for learner’s permits and state ID cards. Lawmakers directed the agency to meet international data-security standards under a 2023 law authored by Rep. Jim Pressel; the BMV said it expects the option to be ready within about 18 months but has not selected a vendor or produced a cost estimate.
