A stretch of River Road south of 96th Street was washed away on Aug. 15, 2026 after historic flooding from the White River. Indianapolis officials told Mirror Indy that local contractor F.A. Wilhelm Construction is draining the site and that the roadway is expected to be rebuilt by the end of 2026.
City officials estimate the repairs will cost about $2.5 million. Sam Beres, chief financial officer for the Indianapolis Department of Public Works, said he’s optimistic most repair costs will be covered through the Federal Highway Administration’s Emergency Relief Program. DPW has recorded about $700,000 in response costs and is coordinating with FEMA while it continues to assess total infrastructure damage; Beres does not foresee "major impacts" to the city’s budget.
