Bloomington Utilities' turbidity spike prompts Monroe County boil-water advisory through Sept. 21

A countywide boil-water advisory was issued around midnight on Sept. 20 after City of Bloomington Utilities (CBU) recorded turbidity at the Monroe water treatment plant above the 1.0-NTU maximum cited in the release. All Monroe County residents were advised to boil water used for drinking, cooking and oral hygiene for at least two minutes until at least 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 21. Boiling is not required for bathing, laundry or other household uses; CBU says cloudy tap water should be run until clear before boiling.

CBU attributed the elevated turbidity to storm-related power outages that reduced plant production and lowered the primary storage tank level, which CBU says “contributed to” the spike. Staff increased water-quality monitoring and adjusted plant operations while continuing to monitor conditions. The release did not give a peak turbidity reading or specify testing criteria for lifting the advisory.
