Indianapolis Motor Speedway notes death of Gordon Johncock, two-time Indy 500 winner, at 90
Gordon Johncock, a two-time Indianapolis 500 winner and the 1976 USAC national champion, died Sept. 28, 2026, at his Michigan home, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway said. Johncock won the 500 in 1973 and 1982 and was inducted into the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum Hall of Fame in 1997.
Gordon Johncock, a two-time Indianapolis 500 winner and the 1976 USAC national champion, died Sept. 28, 2026, at his home in South Branch, Michigan, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and motorsports publications said. Johncock was 90 and recorded 25 wins and 20 poles across 25 seasons and 262 starts in IndyCar Series competition and its predecessors.
Johncock raced in 24 Indianapolis 500 events, winning in 1973 and 1982 and leading 339 total laps in the race. His 1982 victory featured a 0.16-second margin over Rick Mears. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum inducted him into its Hall of Fame in 1997. He is survived by his wife, Sue; three daughters, Patsy, Pamilee and Peggy; two sons, Gordon Jr. and Wally; a stepdaughter, Valerie; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
