Colts coach Shane Steichen explains overtime strategy after 33-30 OT loss to Chiefs
Following the Indianapolis Colts' 33-30 overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 2 of the 2026 season, head coach Shane Steichen outlined his overtime decisions — electing to defend first to limit Patrick Mahomes and planning to try to end the game by giving the ball to Jonathan Taylor.
Steichen said he quickly knew Laquon Treadwell had caught the deep pass that began overtime and, with the call expected to be overturned, began planning from the Chiefs' 17-yard line. His plan was to give the ball to running back Jonathan Taylor — who entered overtime with 95 rushing yards and earlier touchdown runs of 24 and five yards — to try to finish the game.
In overtime Taylor was stopped for a loss of one and then a loss of two on first and second down. Facing third-and-13, Jones scrambled for five yards, leading to a fourth-and-eight sequence that produced a delay-of-game. Kicker Spencer Shrader made a 38-yard field goal to tie it, and Kansas City later drove into range when a third-down 22-yard gain set up Harrison Butker's game-winning kick as the clock hit zero.
