Indiana Steel Fabricating, Inc., based in the Stout Field neighborhood, received a pair of 11,000‑pound World Trade Center beams in July 2011 and carried out about two weeks of work to make them safe for public display at the Indiana 9/11 Memorial, dedicated Sept. 11, 2011.

The shop removed concrete and protruding fragments, preserved any material that fell from the beams, and installed reinforced base plates so the artifacts could be displayed; the work lasted roughly two weeks in July 2011.
The beams arrived under a large U.S. flag and were escorted through Indiana before reaching the west‑side shop. Workers were instructed not to add new marks to the pieces and to collect debris for preservation. The memorial was completed and dedicated on Sept. 11, 2011, and later expanded to include a Pentagon stone, a sapling‑grown tree from Ground Zero, and a limestone wall. Several employees who worked on the beams have since retired or left, while remaining staff cite pride in having participated.
