The Indy Chamber posted four takeaways from the 4th Annual Indiana Creative Economy Summit (sponsored by PATTERN) on Oct. 12, 2026. The chamber said it launched a coalition to establish the Downtown West Innovation District in Indianapolis and noted PATTERN formed the Creative Economy Leadership Alliance (CELA) in 2026.

The summit featured keynote Carol Coletta (Public Innovation Fellow, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg Center for Public Innovation). Indy Economic Development President Josh Richardson and Indy Chamber Chief Strategy Officer Taylor Hughes participated; speakers reported the READi grant program channeled $62.3 million into 49 statewide projects and said successful applications emphasized community buy-in and established relationships.

WHY IT MATTERS

This summary is a concise account of what local leaders told attendees about integrating the creative sector into economic development. Josh Richardson’s comment that the creative economy “isn’t separate from economic development” signals that cultural organizations, creative businesses and placemaking initiatives are being treated as part of how Indiana competes for investment and talent.

Two items to note and watch: READi — identified in the takeaways as a grant program that funneled $62.3 million into 49 statewide projects — rewarded applications showing community buy-in, existing relationships and shared arts-sector knowledge. For example, a hypothetical grant application that documents partnerships with neighborhood groups and regional cultural organizations is more likely to meet the kinds of criteria speakers described. CELA, formed by PATTERN in 2026, is opening membership (individual and enterprise plans are available on CELA’s website), which could become a source of networking, technical assistance or advocacy for creative firms and cultural organizations.

Next steps to watch: announcements from the Indy Chamber, PATTERN or CELA about Downtown West coalition activities and CELA membership events or programming.
